As the new layer of insulation on our mid sections can testify, we just came out of the Thanksgiving Holiday. According to national statistics more people travel every year at Thanksgiving than any other time, including Christmas. How many of those people do you think decided to stay on the plane and keep traveling instead of stopping at their destination? Sorry grandma, I landed in the airport and decided to head on to Maui. Of course that would be silly. But, it’s the weird juxtaposition between arriving and not stopping that “behind the scenes” pastors find themselves.

The church is an ever growing (if we’re healthy), ever evolving (don’t lynch me) entity. As soon as we think we have a process or a program down pat, there’s something new coming on the horizon. I heard a wise person once say that a good leader is a learner. I don’t think that truer words have ever been spoken. If we, as leaders refuse to try and learn new things, then we’re going to go the way of the dinosaur. Again, we have to balance the fact that we have a definite calling with an indefinite and ever changing world.

Now, I suppose that this idea holds true for every believer, we’re supposed to stand firm on our faith (arrival) and yet continue to grow and learn (traveling). 2 Peter 1:5 says:

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;

We arrive at faith, but God wants us to keep on traveling. I just have one question. Does God give frequent flier miles?
