Rantings of a Pastor/Gamer/Historian/Geek
One of the things that I love about being a portable church is that we have more ways for “ordinary people” to serve than a church with a building. Don’t get me wrong, having your own building is nice, but there’s just something cool about having to bring all your own equipment in on Sunday Mornings. I think that it enables all kinds of people to serve. Why’s that so important? I’m glad you asked.
In the next few weeks, LifePoint’s volunteer process is going through a major transformation. (Ok, let’s be honest, we’re going to be implementing our first volunteer process.) In preparation, I’ve been studying the New Testament approach to “volunteering”. While you won’t find Luke, Paul, or any other NT writers using that particular word, they spend a lot time talking about it. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul says:
There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. [1 Corinthians 12:5-6]
Everyone has been given an ability to serve. We may not see the value of someone’s giftings, but Paul did. Just a few verses later he says:
Now the body is not made up of one part, but of many. If the foot should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,’ it would not for that reason cease to be a part of the body…those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable.” [1 Corinthians 12:14-26]
Some people may be gifted to be feet, but you know what? That’s exactly the way that God wanted them to be. I want LifePoint to be the place where everyone can serve. Especially feet. Remember, if we cut off our feet, we won’t have a leg to stand on.
