As to the reasons why things are the way they are (your example is why does gravity exist), it seems that there isn't a need for a reason why in the minds of some. The question "why" is silly -- gravity exists because it exists, as do all forces of nature. The universe is the way it is because it is the way it happens to be. There's no reason "why" behind it. Obviously, I don't find that to be a satisfying explanation! Good points, especially the part about aspects of the experimental sciencies being really philosophy in disguise.
