Suzanne, that's pretty cool the way your pastor does it.

I personally dislike very much the term "member". I'm not a member of anything, I'm a servant to the Body of Christ.

Hear hear. Too many churches cheat when it comes to stating that they have XXX number of members. I "joined" a church as a kid (I mean a kid, like 10), but I haven't set foot in there in 20+ years. I still get their newsletter, and am still counted as a "member".

I like the way my church does it. As of January 1 every single year, they have zero, yes zero-zip-zilch-nada, members. Every single member has to recommit to tithing, serving, and going on at least one mission trip to "join" the church again. Every single year. Our pastor doesn't believe in consumers.

YES!!! For far too long has Church in many people's minds been simply a club with religion stuck on top. In reality, the Church needs to be an intimate fellowship of believers radically committed to living the life of Christ and "doing life together" as Mark Batterson likes to say. It's not an exclusive clique, but should be inherently expanding and reproducing itself. Discipleship and passionate worship, not doctrinal education and a weekly spiritual fix, should be the primary goal.

Sounds like you guys are really trying to go after it! Blessings on your task!
