In case you didn’t know, Spiderman 3 opens this Friday, May 4th. I can’t wait. Seriously. It is going to rock. I’ve loved Spiderman since I was a kid. I think that the director, Sam Rami, has done a great job with the other two films in the franchise, and I have a feeling this one won’t disappoint. Sandman, Green Goblin the duece, and Venom. Oh boy.

Maguire’s Spiderman has successfully bridged the gap between fanboys like myself and normal people. The films are true enough to the comic reality to satisfy the geeks and yet accessible to those who are totally foreign to the franchise. If you are totally foreign to Spiderman though, you are probably Amish. Or you live in a cave. Either way, I’m sure Spiderman 3 will have something for you.

The thing that I look forward to the most in the film (apart from seeing how the creators interpreted Venom) is seeing how Peter deals with his own inner demons. I haven’t seen the movie, but according to the comics, the “black suit” is actually an alien life form. This alien bonds with its host augmenting their physical abilities and eventually driving them to insanity. Although the suit made him stronger, faster and more agile, Spiderman was forced to choose between his sanity and greater power. I’m sure that the movie will use this idea of “greater power” to explore how Peter is in danger of losing his own identity. There’s a lesson there for all us. With great(er) power comes great(er) responsibility.
