Rantings of a Pastor/Gamer/Historian/Geek
Well, my wife and I watched the Will Smith movie The Pursuit of Happyness last night. It was a great movie. The directors, producers and writers did a great job of making you care for the characters. When you’re watching it, you really want Chris Gardener to succeed. You want him to keep his family together, to get a good job and to take care of his son. Despite the wonderful production, though, the most powerful part for me was watching the movie knowing it was based on a true story. True stories are always more powerful. When we see real people struggle to survive, overcome impossible odds or get the job they’ve always wanted, we can’t help but feel a sense of pride. Maybe if they can do it, so can we. The nice thing about true stories is they don’t have to have lots of explosions, karate or fast cars. (But it doesn’t hurt)
When we talk to our friends about Christ, what do we talk to them about? Do we talk to them about the resurrection? Sanctification, Salvation, Redemption? Or do we spend our time telling them what God has done in our lives. People who are on the outside of the church have a hard time relating to God. To them the Bible may be like a movie, a good piece of fiction, but not “based on a true story”. But they can understand and sympathize with us and our experiences. When we tell them our story it’s easier to accept the God parts because they can see us, they know we are real. You see, true stories are always more powerful. So, what’s your story?
